So this post has been a long time coming…I (erin) am officially calling myself a “lifestyle” photographer when it comes to my newborn photo shoots. There are all kinds of photography buzzwords like natural light, modern, fresh, on-location. With so many photographers all using some combination of the same words (including us), it can be hard to know what kind of pictures you really are going to get with the photographer you choose. When I photographed my first newborn (Hi, Grayson!), I had no idea what I was doing and I was scared to death. I knew to set him near a window and that was about it. The pictures were much better than I expected. From there, my newborn business continued to grow. It was easy to just continue doing what I started doing and then try to add in some other ideas, things that I saw on blogs, etc. Not too much later, I became a mother and as seems to be the case about everything, motherhood changed me. It also changed everything about the way I saw photographing newborns. I have been gradually changing my approach and am ready to say for sure that I am not a posed portrait newborn kind of girl. Yes, yes, yes I love to take lots of pictures of your newborn baby. Most of these are posed, some of them may even involve baskets and I love a cute knitted hat as much as the next girl. But the overall approach to my newborn photography is coming into your home and taking pictures of your family welcoming the precious gift of your new baby. Here are a few from a recent session. Meet Ben…

Little miss Caroline came to play in the studio last week! I could just eat her up (which is apparently how she felt about the paper hearts I offered to her).
